Marguerite Gerard (January 28, 1761 - 18 May 1837) French artist, miniatyuristka and book illustrator, a student-Honore Fragonard.
In 16 years, Marguerite Gerard left his home town of Grasse and went to Paris. There she successfully began her career under the guidance of his countryman and elder sister's husband, a famous artist-Honore Fragonard. Initially, she learns from her brother in law, then becomes his assistant. Fragonard strongly supports and promotes its ability protege. There were even rumors that between the master and his pupil not quite established a working relationship. Whatever it was, in all probability, some pictures of Fragonard wrote with Marguerite.
The fragrance of his native city in the literal and figurative sense of the impact on the work of both: Grasse - perfume capital of France, and the family Fragonard and Gerard from generation to generation passed on the secrets of delicious smells. And those who decided to become an artist, it seemed, wanted to fill their job sunlight south and create for each picture a unique flavor. |

Marguerite worked in various genres and techniques, but gradually it comes to "own" theme - the theme of family life and comfort, created by the hands of women, happy motherhood. It depicts a scene calm, measured, quiet life, which her contemporaries carried surrounded by children, many households, pets and staff workers. Pets, especially cats, were frequent characters in the works of Marguerite. These family scenes, unfortunately, were not autobiographical. Marguerite borrowed from the life of their ladies of his era, or they were the product of her imagination, as the artist herself never married and had no children. |
After the French Revolution, when women were granted the right to exhibit his paintings in art galleries, Marguerite Gerard happily took advantage of this opportunity.
Beginning in 1799 and until 1824 she regularly took an active part in exhibitions. In 1801, Marguerite has received a special award, which is awarded to talented artists, and in 1804 - a gold medal from the hands of Napoleon, who appreciated her beautiful paintings. Despite the obvious attraction to the theme of home, Marguerite Gerard was able to find its place in the artistic life of revolutionary France and Bonaparte. She managed to combine his interest in the "ladies" theme with the realities of the time, as evidenced by the 1808 painting "Mercy of Napoleon." |

She also practiced engraving and etchings reproduced in some of the compositions of Fragonard.
For works Choderlos de Laclos "Les liaisons dangeureuses" Gerard has performed a series of illustrations.
The only genre to which the artist is rarely addressed, a portrait, although in this area have succeeded many famous artists of that time. The artist's paintings are in museums and private collections, and many are sold at auction.
